Professor Summers greeted his students from behind his desk as they entered the classroom, gesturing for them to take their seats. This particular group of second years were the handful he had taught the previous years. He was yet to meet the students from the other two houses. Transferring positions was a pain like that. At least these faces were familiar. "Good morning, and welcome back to Transfiguration. For those new students who have transferred over, or the old ones who are simply just forgetful, I'm Professor Aeon Summers. Now, let's get started. As I'm sure you all remember, first year was centered around Inanimate to Inanimate Transfiguration. We're completely done with that branch. This year we're moving on to something more complex; Animate to Inanimate. It's a lot more challenging than what we've done so far, but I'm confident that most of you won't have too much trouble." The wizard glanced around the classroom, happy that the majority of them had seemed somewhat capable from the previous year. They were a few who were rather disappointing, but he couldn't have a perfect class. "If you all remember back to first year, we went over Transfiguration terms and their meanings in your first lesson. If you can't properly recall, Animate to Inanimate transfigures something living into something that is not. For example, a hamster into a rock, or a flamingo into a lawn flamingo. Of course, as much fun as trolling muggles by selling temporarily transfigured animals would be, the Ministry doesn't allow it. Rules are rules I guess. Anyway, as with Inanimate to Inanimate Transfiguration, you're still using the three-tap method, so nothing changes there." He stopped to make sure everyone was following along, continuing when he was sure at least most eyes were on him. "A few people have some difficulty understanding how Animate to Inanimate transfiguration works. We don't take the life away from the animals, it's more like we suspend it. They still has some small degree of awareness and thought, but are incapable of movement, speech, seeing or hearing. If you were to turn a person into a couch, they essentially are a couch for that period of time. They're aware if you were to sit on them, yet aren't able to do anything but provide you with comfort." Summers got to his feet and walked around to the front of his desk as he spoke, suddenly feeling uncomfortable to be sitting in his own seat. The reality of it was that anything had the potential of being something else. A book thrown into a fire may very well have once been a human, transfigured into an object as a punishment or prank. Which brought him to his next step of the lesson. "There was once a time where Transfiguration was used to punish dark wizards and other rule-breakers. Before Azkaban, wizarding authorities had few places to hold wizards and witches. As such, they resorted to changing them into a stationary figure. Their bodies were turned to stone and became their prisons." His face was far more serious as he spoke. There were depictions of this punishment in old books around the library, and it wasn't pleasant. "Wizardkind has always had questionable methods of punishment. This method has not been used in a long time, but it wasn't that long ago that we still had Dementors roaming Azkaban. Thankfully now we have a less cruel system in place. Which brings us to your homework." Summers waved his wand toward the board, the chalk quickly scrawling their task onto its surface before they were dismissed. Homework Essay: In your opinion, does transfiguration make a good punishment? Why or why not? (Just a paragraph or two showing your character's opinion) Transfiguration,2,1 |

It had taken a lot of persuading from Cairo but Rome had eventually agreed that perhaps attending a few lessons wouldn't be a terrible idea, Rome grew bored and restless in classrooms, they were the sort of environment which just made her want to punch something when the lesson ran too long or made her do too much. But she had agreed to it, and so, Rome on that day had taken time out of doing absolutely anything else and had begun getting ready, she'd put the heavy books into her bag and then gotten dressed in the slytherin uniform before then heading out of the dorm and to get something to eat, the slytherin girl knew that if she at least had something to eat she wouldn't become too hungry in the class, at least her hunger wouldn't distract her from attempting to learn a few bits and pieces within the lesson time, or drive her to further frustration over having to wait. Eventually Rome couldn't postpone it any longer and she wandered through the school until she reached the room, sighing heavily as she wandered in. Rome took her seat in the classroom just as her brother did and glanced up to the professor who was stood at the front of the classroom, she was on the one hand looking forward to this a lot, but then on the other, she just didn't want to end up doing more boring theory work which a lot of this class had been last year, Rome understood fully that there were just a lot of classes with theory work, but she didn't have to enjoy it. The professor began his lesson, saying they'd be moving on to something more complex, and though she was coming to realise that they were likely not going to be doing any magic but was listening along anyway, thinking it not a terrible idea to do so. She knew of a number of people within her year that would definitely be more useful at couches than anything else, but clearly they weren't allowed to just change people into couches without getting into trouble which she thought was a real pity. She listened along, though the lesson was dragging a little, she enjoyed it a lot more than she thought she would. However, despite this, as the lesson was wrapped up and they were allowed to leave, Rome didn't make a note of the homework, since she very much didn't intend to do it. |

Rudolf couldn't wait to begin his second year of Transfiguration. He thought Professor Summers was great, and it never failed to astound him when he thought about the ease with which the man could turn into a fluffy husky. Becoming an animagus sounded great, and the Gryffindor was keen to learn more about it when he became of an age that he could do so. He sat down in his chair and waited for the rest of the class to settle down before the Professor began. He listened confidently, remembering nearly everything Professor Summers told them from the previous year. His face lit up considerably when he heard that humans could be transfigured. Rudolf thought his twin brother would have made a very comfortable couch indeed. The topic turned a little sombre after that. Rudolf sunk guiltily in his chair, feeling terribly sorry for the wizards who had been imprisoned in their own bodies. He supposed that, given they'd broken the law, they probably deserved such a cruel punishment, but he still didn't agree with it. Not being able to speak or move sounded like a dreadful thing to happen to anyone. He felt quite strongly on this matter, and when the class was dismissed, he stayed behind to write his essay and handed it in within half an hour. Then he thanked the Professor and headed off to find Reuben. |

Maddie sat down at a desk near the back of the classroom, she hated being too close to the front, it felt like she was being watched all the time which meant no time to mess around or to daydream. She got out her writing things and waited for the Professor to begin the lecture. She was delighted to her that they were moving on from inanimate to inanimate to something more advanced. However, Maddie thought that it was a bit cruel to change a living thing into an object and didn't think she would enjoy this year as much as she thought. She made a note of the homework and left the classroom in search of something more fun to take her mind off of this morbid class. |

Charlotte was very excited to be back at Hogwarts for another year. She had missed the place and was very glad to be able to see her friends again. When she entered the Transfiguration Classroom she took a seat next to Maddie and began to take out her quill and parchment for another lecture. She hated lectures but if they had important information in them that would be required for the end of year exam then she would have to put up with it. She made sure that she wrote as many notes down as she could throughout the whole lesson. The fact that Transfiguration was once used for punishment was a bit weird in Charlotte's opinion. If she went to Azkaban she'd much rather be locked up in a cage than being turned into stone. It was quite something to take in but she wrote down as much as she could about it anyway incase it was to ever come up in an exam. Writing down the homework, she left the classroom when the lesson ended and made her way to her next class. Hopefully next lesson they'd be able to learn a new spell instead of sitting around listening to the professor talk. |

Hemi was glad to be back at Hogwarts but had not yet picked up the motivation for classes. He paid little attention during their first Transfigurations class, spending more time doodling on his parchment than taking actual notes. He groaned when they were told to write an essay for homework, he thought Professor Summers might've gone easy on them for the first lesson back. |

James was glad to be back at Hogwarts and eager to get some of his lessons up and running. Others not so much, Transfiguration was one of the one he looked forward to because it was by far one of the most interesting subjects. He made his way inside the classroom and took a seat along with some of his fellow Gryffindors. He smiled at the familiar faces of Hemi and Rudolph and blanked Maddie. Their relationship had shown no signs of warming in the first few days of the semester so he wasn't going to put in the effort. James listened to Professor Summers as he talked about Animate to Inanimate Transfiguration. That sounded terrifying, but also kind of cool. Personally he wouldn't want to be turned into a statue, though he couldn't say he wouldn't wish it on anyone. Maddie would make a rather nice statue in the Gryffindor common room. He smiled at the thought and made some notes on the subject. At the end of the lesson he packed away his notes and left the classroom. |
