Professor Summers greeted the students as they entered the classroom with a grin, looking at them over a large box nestled on his desk with a black cloth draped over its exterior, cloaking its contents in darkness. As the fifth years found their seats, Aeon got to his feet and made his way to the front of his desk, stopping to lean against its edge as he called for the students attention, one hand signalling to hush any conversations. "Good afternoon guys. Today we'll be practicing more vanishing! Last weeks work was a fantastic start, and most of you got the hang of it pretty quickly. But this lesson, we'll be moving on from small, inanimate objects."

With a flourish, the Professor tore away the black cloth to reveal a large glass tank separated into two sides, slugs and snails, the creatures crawling over each other in their limited space. The bottom of the box oozed with slime. "Instead, we'll be practicing on living creatures! Charming, aren't they? Two reasons as to why we're using slugs and snails. One, these guys are invertebrates, meaning they lack a backbone. This makes them a lot less complex than other creatures that do. Secondly, they're gross and I think most of you will find it easier to vanish them if you don't want them around, otherwise they're going to track slime across everything. Eck." Summers concluded with a disgusted sound.

"Alright, so. The reason we have both slugs and snails is their difficulty. Slugs are simpler, there's really not much to them. However, snails have their additional shell, making them slightly more challenging. Whichever you want to go with is up to you and how confident you feel. I want everyone to come up and pick one. Or just summon it to your desk, if you're feeling particularly lazy. I'd rather you didn't though, it could get a bit messy. Now everyone up!" Summers pushed the glass box forward and removed its lid, stepping aside as his fifth years picked through its contents.

Once everyone had something to practice on, he closed the top again and resumed leaning against the desk. "As usual, three tap method, don't use this on other people because of the Ministry bla bla, so on and et cetera. You know the drill. Just bear in mind that when it comes to vanishing living things, you run the risk of splinching it." A few blank stares were returned to him before he realised not everyone knew what splinching even was. "Oh! Right. Of course, none of you have taken apparition lessons. Can anyone tell me what splinching is?" Summers asked, looking across the room. He selected one students raised hand and let them explain the answer. "Yup, that's right. Not pleasant, I can tell you that. So when you're vanishing these little guys, do try to vanish all of it and not just a portion. I'll be walking around the room so if you need any help, don't hesitate to ask. You may begin."

Rhiannon entered the transfiguration classroom and she was hoping to be able to get this weeks spell working well. She had been practicing her vanishing over the week on pieces of rubbish all week. She entered the transfiguration room ready to get started when she saw what they would be working on she frowned, snails and slugs. At least they wouldnt run away like beatles did when she was trying to transfigure them. forst however they were having a lecture she had her pen and notebook ready to take notes.
when the professor said that even snugs and snails could be splinched she crinkled her nose, it sounded painful. and when asked to explain splinvching she raised her hand. "splinching is when only half, or rather part, of a body vnishes, notthe whole thind, so part of the body is left behind, it is a common problem in appiration." she said giving maybe a little more information than strictly necessery.
Soon it was time to practice. rhiannon went to the front ofthe class and picked up a slug, by the time she had got back to her desk she wished she had insted taken a piece of paper to carry it back on. She lifted her wans and taped the slimy creature three times miagaining it vanishnd. She watched as it did nothing she tried again. this time the slig had gone leaving a rather nice short train of goo accross the desk. She made a secondgo and was happy to see that it has all gone. She went back to the front of the classroom and picked up a snail ready totry something slightly more complex. She tapped her wand three times and the snail vanished, or rather the bit outside the shell did. she seemed to have splinched it. she tried again and managed to vanish the snail but notthe shell. she had a quick second attempt and with three taps the shell was also gone. she was about to go and gt another one when the cost wnet up and she packed up her things ready to head to the library before lunch. she stopped at professors desk. "thank you for class today professor summers, i how that you have a good week" she said before leaving.

notes

"O +3 EC. Good work, and thank you for answering my question in detail. Just try to avoid splinching in future!"
