Professor Davershire arrived in her classroom early. She put the finishing touches on her lecture for the start of the term, and sat down in her desk, ready for the students to enter. As they came in, she smiled at them while they took their seats.

"Alright, let's get started." she said, standing. "I am your Transfiguration Professor My name is Professor Ava Davershire." she said introducing herself. "No wands, today unfortunately. We'll be covering some basic theory first off." The class let out a collective groan and a shout of protest, and she laughed slightly. "Toughen up! This is what you would have had with any other professor too." She smirked, then waved her wand at the chalkboard.

Limits Of Transfiguration: Theory

"Now, as we all live in an age where the use of magic isn't prohibited by the Muggles who had smothered us for so long," she began, "we need have to have a few restrictions for ourselves, to ensure that we do not go overboard.

"First off," Professor Davershire started, "although magic can foresee death, it cannot reverse it. Death is an extremely complicated idea, and to understand it fully, we have a few wizards working in the Department of Mysteries. However, we are yet not sure about its composition. We need to believe that we cannot reverse the effects of death at this time. We can prevent it, as we now have several forms of elixir and several kinds of spells with us, but we cannot bring a man back from the dead. That is the hardest truth you have to learn. We may want to, we may have the best of intentions behind that desire, but it just is not capable yet."

"Next, we move on to magical medicine," Professor Davershire continued. "We can cure an infinite amount of ailments by magic, we can repair all kinds of damage to the body - even re-growing bones with Skele-Gro. But we cannot expect this kind of treatment all the time. There are a few Dark spells, which prohibit our actions, making us unable to cure, even if we do have the cure. We can usually grow bones in a night, but there are a few wizards who have to wear iron stumps for legs, having been unable to grow them back. Madness, insanity is another illness which we fail to cure."

"We cannot obtain skills and knowledge by magical methods," Professor Davershire continued. "You cannot just have a spell to have everything fixed into your mind. Even if such a spell were invented, around school, we do have anti-Cheating Charms, which prohibit you from using any form of special spells like that during your examination," she looked around the room and then moved on.

"Lastly, you cannot obtain money or any kind of possession which requires money by magic," Professor Davershire explained. "Or it'd have been very easy for us - for you - to wave our wands, say an incantation and have a bagful of galleons ready! But that is not so. You cannot obtain any material possession by magic."

"So... what CAN you do? You can change what is already there, for starters. As for the rest, well... it's in this class and in your textbooks. Thus, I will leave the answer to that... to homework." She smiled. The class groaned.
