Professor Davershire stood behind her desk as she looked at the second years who were returning students, with an excited smile on her face.

"Welcome to your second year everyone! For anyone who does not know already, I am Professor Davershire." she said excitedly. "Now, lets do a quick review before we start on the new materials for this year. Who can tell me the spells and transfigurations you learned last year?" A few hands raised and she pointed at three of them, each giving her a different spell.

"Good! I am glad to see that you remember those. If anyone has any issues with Inanimate to Inanimate Transfiguration, please come see me. I would be glad to help you with anything. This year we are going to cover lots of things including Inanimate to Animate and Animate to Inanimate Transfiguration, so I need your full attention." She said sternly.

Animate to Inanimate Transfiguration

She flicked her hand at the board, wandlessly casting the writing to appear. "Animate to Inanimate Transfiguration," Ava began, "changes something living into something non-living. Just like Inanimate to Inanimate Transfiguration, we need proper wand movement as well as good concentration to be successful. Animate to Inanimate Transfiguration uses the 'three tap' method. Basically, it is three taps in the air, or on the animal itself, then a quick swish to finish the spell off. Very much the same as with Inanimate to Inanimate Transfiguration. Let's practice shall we?" She lifted her wand and demonstrated the motion, and then watched as the students practiced with her.

"Good stuff. As you transform a living object into a nonliving one, life is not taken away from it. The object can still feel, and even see if it is transfigured into something that has eyes, but it simply cannot move or speak. You only change the shape and form, and not what the object thinks and feels with this transfiguration. For example, if you are changing a quill into a spoon, there is no feelings involved between the two objects. A quill is an inanimate object and it has neither heart nor brain. But if you change a tortoise into a kettle, what do you think? Would the tortoise feel like a kettle?" Professor Davershire asked, smiling as a few students giggled across the class.

"The same applies for Animate to Animate Transfiguration that you will get to learn next year. Lots of students think that if you have a cat and have to send a letter to someone living away from you, then you can simply transform your cat into an owl and it will work. Unfortunately it will never happen." Students looked surprised at this fact.

"A cat could never become an owl, because he doesn't know how to be an owl. He would still have the brain of a cat. Simply speaking, you can only change forms, but not the animal's internal natures. The exception to this is with Inanimate to Animate Transfiguration which we should get to later this year.

At one point in time, Animate to Inanimate Transfiguration was used as a way of punishing dark wizards and law-breakers. Before Azkaban Prison was built, wizard authorities required a suitable punishment. Without a common place to put them, they turned to an alternate idea: transfiguring the offending witch or wizard into a stationary figure.
" Ava looked at the class with a serious expression. "This practice has been discontinued with the building of Azkaban prison. There are differing views on the use of this type of punishment, which brings us to our homework. I know, what a sucky Professor, homework from your first class? Nevertheless, I would like your opinion on the use of this Transfiguration as punishment. Due by next class. Any questions or concerns, please stop by my office. Have a great rest of the day!" She dismissed the class with a smile and a wave.

[justify]Raymond Mandy walked into Transfiguration and took a seat in the front of the room. He was excited for this class. He had not done so well last year, but he had a goal this year. He was not going to give up that easily. He took out quill and ink to prepare for some notes. Transfiguration was serious business. He knew there were going to be noted for this class. Professor Davershire began the class with a question. Raymond calmly raised his hand. "Scorpiea." he said confidently. He had not performed the spell correctly last year, and he did not believe that he even attempted the spell. He knew he was going to spend some more time reviewing after class today. The professor continued to talk, and Ray Ray began taking loose notes. Full sentences were never required unless he was going to quote directly from the instructor, which he was not going to do. He did not see how a tortoise being turned into a kettle was funny, but he did not dwell on it. The topic of transfiguration as a punishment came up, and Raymond agreed that it was a good punishment. A criminal deserved a good punishment. He would not mind turning a certain Slytherin girl into a kettle. A paragraph on the topic was assigned and Raymond smiled. He felt this was the only assignment he would ever be happy to wrote about. He packed up his things and left when class was dismissed.

Slytherin, Second Year
Lesson One

Transfiguration should be used as a punishment against criminals and lawbreakers. There is nothing more horrible that being stuck inside your own head without being able to communicate or do anything. It can be considered torture, but they should not have broke the law in the first place. Laws were made to decrease the possibility of harm to any living person. Transfiguration is a strong magic that needs to be used to its fullest potential to protect the wizarding community.

Most mornings Prue was only semi-happy to be going to her classes, however, this particular morning was extra special for the young woman, whom was bouncing down the hallways. Prudence had found out her first year at the wonderful school, that she wanted to study Transfiguration for the rest of her life. Her ultimate goal was becoming an animagus though, and she was determined to do so. She entered the rather warm classroom, her face split by a pearly-toothed grin. "Good morning!" She greeted the professor and a few of the other students whom she shared the class with. Her seat was in the front, center of the room as always so she could be sure she'd earn high marks in this class. Over the break she had practiced writing with quills, and her penmanship had improved outstandingly, meaning she would be able to take neat notes through the class. However, she would still be re-copying them. Once her entire desk area was set up, Prudence sat with hands folded in her lap for the start of instruction.

The class started right off with a question about last year, and Prue was the second to shoot a hand into the air. The first voice called out te spell that she was first going to say. She still owned the rusty spoon that she had transfigured last year. However, she remember another spell quickly and answered second with, "Gemelitiar." Prue listened to other students get the answers right and then began taking notes as diligently as always. Learning about Animate to inanimate transfiguration was exhilarating, and she couldn't believe some of the things that one could do using transfiguration. Once the class was over, she decided to stay for a little extra time and finish up her notes and the extra credit. Once she'd finished, she handed in the essay with a smile, and left the class. Not before saying a kind good bye to their professor.

Aliyah enjoyed Transfigurations classes although it wasn't necessarily the strongest of her wand waving courses. After everything she had learned in the class last year, the second year was curious to what they be doing next. She eagerly made her way to the fifth corridor classroom and went directly to her usual seat in the front row. The Slytherin gave a short wave to Prudence as the Gryffindor greeted other students around her. Professor Davershire, as cheerful as always, began the class with an easy question about the spells they had learned pervious year and Aliyah's hand immediately shot into the air. The young witch heard a familiar voice and spun around glared in the owner's direction as they got the first spell correct. She had no clue who had hit Raymond Mandy upside the head with a book over the break to make him a better student, but his sudden bout of studiousness was seriously getting her nerves. Prudence was able to name the second spell and Aliyah began to frantically wave her hand toward the Headmistress. There was no way she was going to let those two get extra points and not herself. "Flammeus Tailora!" When she was called upon, she blurted out the last spell like the words were burning a hole in her mouth.

Relived that she was able to secure more points for Slytherin House, Aliyah was able to focus on the day's lecture, which proved to be quite an interesting one. Inanimate to Animate and Animate to Inanimate Transfiguration sounded complex indeed and the examples that Professor Davershire did a wonderful job of showing that. She practiced the wand movements along with the teacher and wrote down notes as she spoke. The twelve year old didn't even mind being assigned homework the first week of class as the lesson gave her a lot to think about and she was actually excited to get the chance to but her thoughts on paper. Her mind was still buzzing as she packed up her things at the end of class. Not wanting to forget a thing, she headed down to the Great Hall to write her homework over a nice glass of pumpkin juice.
