Professor Davershire stook at the front of the classroom next to her desk watching as the students filed into the room. She smiled as she saw all of the first years, their faces showing how excited they were to learn, or in turn, how annoyed they were to be in class. Once everyone was seated, she moved forwards, greeting them with a smile. "Hello! Welcome first years! This is Transfiguration. I hope you all are in the right classroom." She looked about the room, making sure no one stood to leave. "For those of you who do not know, my name is Professor Ava Davershire and I will, hopefully, successfully guide you through the world of Transfiguration. Throughout your first year, we are going to cover Inanimate to Inanimate transfiguration; this kind of transfiguration can only be used to make something of equal size, like a needle to a match, for example. You will soon see I believe in hands on leaning, so please make sure you bring your wand to every lesson." She looked around the class and noticed a few students who look sheepishly down. "A little about myself; I attended Hogwarts here, and was in Gryffindor. I excelled in transfiguration, eventually taking up a role in the class I loved so much. I have two children both of which have graduated from here." she said smiling at them all. She loved Riley and Braxton dearly. "I am also a registered animagus, which you will learn more details about as your studies progress. But basically, I am able to transfigure myself into an animal at will." Suddenly, Professor Davershire turned into a Golden Retriever with big blue eyes, that matched her own. She jumped up on the desk and sat at the edge, looking at everyone, then just as quickly, turned back into herself, still sitting on the desk. "Okay, to get started. Transfiguration is not just the name of changing one object into another. You must have an idea about all types of transfiguration before you actually learn them," she said with a flick of her wand at the blackboard. The following was now written there:
"First off, I want to also give you some vocabulary. Inanimate means that the object is not alive. Animate, well, is something that is alive. You are all here, and most of you seem to be animate today, which is a good thing. Some of you could be a bit more animate though." Professor Davershire chuckled as she walked about, tapping on a desk or two of those in the back who seemed to be dosing off. "Let's jump right in and discuss the first four types of Transfiguration. Inanimate to Inanimate simply changes one object that is not alive into another object that is not alive. Most of the time, these are easiest to perform. Inanimate objects will stay put while you cast your spell, leaving you to worry only about changing shape, color, size, and things of that nature," Professor Davershire flicked her wand at a vase on the table that changed into a teacup. "The second type of transfiguration is Inanimate to Animate." Ava flicked her wand again, this time at her chair. It shook a few times, then it started shrinking while changing its shape at the same time. Suddenly, everyone saw a fluffy little kitten that walked around the class, mewing softly, before it finally cuddled against the feet of one of the students. "It wasn't supposed to do that," Professor Davershire said with a laugh, leaving it at the student's feet. "Inanimate to Animate Transfiguration changes one non-living object into one living object. They are tricky to pull off, since you must essentially give life to something that would ordinarily not have it. The third type," she turned toward the class and continued, "Animate to Inanimate, performs in the opposite manner of the Inanimate to Animate ones. You will use these spells to turn something that moves and breathes into something that is no longer technically alive," she said. "The fourth type of transfiguration is Animate to Animate Transfiguration. This is one of the most difficult types of transfiguration. This transfiguration changes one animate, alive, living object into another animate, alive, living object. Since we don't have a live object here for me to use to demonstrate, I will show you these transfigurations some other time. So we end our lesson here today. And now, like a terrible Professor, you have homework on your first day," Professor Davershire said grinning and waved her wand at the board, making the homework appear. Homework: RP the lesson. Extra Credit: Choose one of the types of transfiguration and write about either a real myth or a legend where one thing was transformed into another (or you can make a story up.) |

Rose was the first girl out of her dorm and the first to leave the safety of the Ravenclaw Tower. She had been having mixed feelings about lessons and the inevitably human interaction but when she had seen that Transfiguration would be her first lesson she planned to get up really early and miss all the commotion. After spending an hour walking about the castle, Rose began to notice people start to emerge so she made her way excitedly to the classroom and waited for lesson to begin. When the time came and the door finally opened Rose entered and sat near the front. After seeing the beautiful headmistress turn into a golden retriever it began to get her wondering if anyone could do it. All the professor said on it so far was that she was a "registered Animagus."She didn't understand what the professor meant by registered but could not wait for that lesson. During the course of the lesson Rose felt that their were many questions left unanswered such as "Where does the life come from when changing the inanimated to the animated?" or "Where did the professor's clothes go when she changed into the dog?." Rose felt robbed at the fact that this lesson left her with more questions than knowledge and rushed from the room and headed straight to the library upon being dismissed. /color] |

Kurtis found himself feeling a little drowsy as he wandered to his next lesson at his own speed. Usually he would have started worrying about if he was going to be late or not, but right then he was too tired to concentrate on something like that. The previous night had brought around very little sleep, he was tossing and turning all night and now he felt the repercussions as he wandered into the classroom and plonked into one of the empty seats. Hopefully he could stay awake long enough to actually pay attention to what was going on as he didn't want to make the Headmistress angry during the first lesson. No, Kurtis wanted to do well in his lessons and to do that he would just have to force himself to stay awake no matter what and no matter how hard it was going to be on him. Rubbing his eyes a little he started to take notes on the lesson, trying to make sure that he got everything down so it would be easier to revise from, but in his drowsy state he was sure he was probably missing something. Hopefully not and if he did he could always just ask the Professor later on and she seemed a nice enough person and not someone he felt too intimidated by. The lesson was mostly just learning about the different types of transfiguration and at a first glance it all just seemed to be so confusing, but Kurtis tried to not let that get to him. No, he could take a challenge and he would try and master it all seeing as that was all he really wanted from his school career anyway. Finally the class was dismissed and quickly scribbling down the homework the first year packed up all of his things away neatly before leaving, hoping to catch a short nap so he wouldn't fall asleep during his next lesson. Victoria was nervous as she left the Hufflepuff common room, she had fallen in behind some of her fellow first years as they made their way from the dorms and out to their first Transfiguration lesson. When she first heard about the subject her initial thought was that it sounded complicated. There was a little buzz of excitement when she entered the classroom, first years excitedly discussing the magic they were looking forward doing and some first years boasting about the spells they could already perform. Victoria put her head down and went over to an empty seat determined not to draw attention to herself. She took a seat and she waited for the Professor to begin her lesson, hoping that she wouldn't be asked anything and have her lack of knowledge revealed. Professor Davershire seemed enthusiastic as she went through the basics of her subject and introduced the class to some of the vocabulary that they would become used to throughout the course of the term. She took notes as the lesson progressed, making notes here and there to look things up to get a better understanding before the next lesson. Victoria felt like she had a lot of catching up to do before she was anywhere near the level of knowledge of some of her classmates. She still felt like she had a long way to go as she packed up at the end of the lesson and headed out of the classroom. |

With hair curled on a wand not at all similar to her magic wand, Leila had finished getting ready that morning. Her hair spray had been put on to keep it all in place and then the young witch was off. As she had woken a little later than most days she had not bothered to grab something to eat from the Great Hall, instead she went straight to class and took her seat. She wasn't exactly anxious but she did want to do well in class and so she took a seat beside someone who did not look like they would be the type to talk without being called on or tap their foot, wand or quill excessively so that she could focus. If necessary she would sit elsewhere but for the first lesson she was happy where she was and so the young witch took a small piece of parchment out as well as a quill and waited for it all to begin. Although sorting had been a stressful ordeal for the young witch she did recognize the Professor before her as the Head Mistress and so she made a note to be extremely well behaved in this class above all others and to always do the assignments as best as she could. Only talking about plans for the school year and rules got dull so Leila Hamilton's mind wandered briefly but came back when the Professor changed from a human into a dog. The girl gasped in shock, her eyes wide and her heart racing. How could her family not have told her about this? What if she was going to suddenly turn into an animal? Leila panicked because if that was the case, how would she know how to change back? Throughout the rest of the class Leila did manage to take notes and listen but was indeed worried about whatever animagoose meant because there had not been nearly enough information given out and she had half a mind to raise her arm up high to ask about it but did not and would be certain to research it later so she could understand what had happened before her very concerned eyes. Her notes were a little shakier than most days due to her shock but succinct enough and when they were dismissed Leila packed them away and walked down to the Great Hall for a quick snack, uncertain what to write her homework about. |

Ada was starting to feel more confident in guiding herself around the school, yesterday she was able to make it to the Great Hall without needing to ask for help. Ada may or may not have been over pleased with herself about it. For the first time, she made it to class on time. Listening to Professor Davershire was easy as pie, her voice was melodic, and she had a very gentle aura to her. Taking notes on everything she could, anything she could. Her hand was flying faster than a Nimbus 2001. She had taken a seat in the middle/front area, not wanting to seem to eager, Ada had her textbook, ink, and pen all lined up with extras in her bag. Thinking about her bag and how she had stayed up after her first herbology lesson sewing the freaking strap back on gave her a headache, and a hand cramp. Reading over her notes, and adding the homework at the end she smiled and thanked the professor before leaving happily back to her dorm.
