[Justify]Today marked the last actual lesson of the year for his second year students. As was common for the school most professor taught five weeks of lessons with the sixth week used to study and a week or so for the students to prepare for the final exam. The semester was almost at a close and for the students hard work James had decided to teach the kids a special spell that most should find fascinating. The weeks prior had been spent teaching the schools approved curriculum and the required educational guidelines set down by the ministry, whereas this week he decided to venture off the beaten path and teach the students the blue bell flame. The fire created by this charm did not burn to the touch like most fire and could be stored in containers for a short period of times such as jars or bottles. So with a wave of his wand he opened a nearby chest filled with old canning jars that he had found at a muggle antique mart this past weekend. With several slow and waves of his wand the jars flew about and landed on the desk around the room. With a smile he hummed a little song as he went about his work and soon every desk in the class had a jar on top, James flicked his wand at the classroom door causing it to open slowly. The students slowly entered the classroom as the chatter of the day’s lesson was on everyone’s mind. With a smile and a wave of his hand he greeted his students who all quickly sat down as some inspected their jars with mild interest. Once everyone had sat down and quieted a bit he cleared his throat as he leaned against his desk. “Welcome students to your last official lesson of charms this year. You have all done extraordinarily well this term and as a treat for your hard work I shall show you a fun and unique charm. Known as the Blue Bell Flame charm, Innocens Inflamarae, creates a blue flame that provides warmth and light while not burning the practitioner or target for that matter. The spell could have been the spell referred to in the muggle bible as the one that caused the burning bush but that is merely speculation and no hard evidence has ever been found. The most interesting part of the blue bell flame is that it does not need oxygen to burn and can be stored in containers hence the jars on your desk. You will all be casting the charm and storing the fire in your jars. There is a time limit of about an hour before the charm wears off.” James said as he picked up his own jar and pulled out his wand to demonstrate. “The incantation is an easy one so once you have practice a few times to yourselves, you are to use the swish and flick method while saying the spell in a clear voice. Innocens Inflamarae!” James said as he swished his wand and flicked it at the jar causing at first a small spark but after a moment a small blue flame that hung in the air. Pointing his wand at the flame he guided the fire into his jar where he filled the small container with the fire before screwing on the cap. The jar was warm to the touch and glowed with the brilliance of several small candles which garnered a gasp and ohs’ as James placed the jar on his desk for all to see. “I would like all of you to try and fill your jar with a blue bell flame by the end of the class. You may keep the jars to practice with as a souvenir. Next class we will be having a small party, those of you who have homework or assignments can use the time to get caught up, while the rest of you may hang out or practice any of the spells learned this semester in charms. I will provide all the necessary equipment for you next class. With that you may spend the rest of the class trying to produce the blue bell charm. I will be around to help any of you who need it.” James said as he walked about the class and helped the students out until the end of the class where he dismissed them for the day. Iason was feeling very refreshed this week after his weekend at Brightstone, a little retail therapy was always good for the soul, and for him that meant new quills, parchment paper and ink. Although the weekend wasn't all fun and games with Quidditch practice on at full force with the next coming up the following week and with Halloween this week they knew they would probably get little practice so they were being worked to the bone. Although Iason didn't mind this, he liked being challenged with having to juggle many things at one time, he knew it was stimulating and would help him in later years when it really mattered to be able to multi-task well. For now though he wasn't going to think too much about Quidditch and enjoy this week, the run up to Halloween was always exciting, and the actually Halloween Feast - it was important to unwind every so often and not have your heads in your books all the time. Having got more sleep this week Iason was much more ready for classes than he was last week and started his day with full force and ready to take on the week with the Halloween Feast at the weekend the treat at the end of it. Entering the classroom he took his seat and placed his writing equipment out in front of him, waiting for the class to start. Iason started to write down the information Professor Killian was giving them about the spell he would be teaching them today. Iason had never really heard of this spell before, it wasn't in their core book for this class and was wondering why Professor Killian wasn't sticking to the core curriculum, there was rules for a reason and they should be followed - Iason only hoped that the Professor they got in future years would be better than this one. Iason watched as the Professor demonstrated the spell and once it was there turn he collected his jar and went back to his desk to try it. Performing the common wand movement Iason spoke the incantation, but no avail. After a few minutes of swishing and flicking Iason was finally able to produce one of the blue flames. He had to admit they looked rather cool and their effects were interesting. It took him the rest of the class to finally fill his jar with blue flames. Some of them had started to die off already as their hour time limit approached so when it came to the end of the class Iason didn't mind putting it into his bag, not having to worry about it over heating it too much as the flames would all but be gone by the time he got back to the Slytherin Common Room no doubt. Packing up his things he left the class. |

It was his second to last Charms lesson of the year and Lorin felt excitement flooding through his veins like electrical surges of energy. He knew that the Professor was of a kinder nature and would most likely be making their last, pre-examination lessons, fun ones. So it was that the Ravenclaw second year entered the classroom with a bolt of optimism pulsing through his youthful body. Lorin seated himself down in his usual place, before his attention was well and truly drawn to the glass jar resting upon his desk. He could only speculate upon what it was that they might be studying that day. He was not disappointed. The Professor went on to explain exactly what the purpose of today's lesson would be; master the Blue Bell Flame charm. Lorin's ears pricked up and he listened, alert, to Professor Killian's every word and instruction. He intended to do his very best in all of his classes, and he especially hoped to achieve a high grade in his Charms lessons. This lesson, while intended to be a little more fun than those of previous sessions, was treated with just as much- if not more- importance as those which had come to pass. Lorin was rather looking forward to it and, after practicing the enchantment several times over beneath his breath- "Innocens Inflamarae.. Innocens Inflamarae.. Innocens Inflamarae.." -the boy began to grow confident enough in his abilities to actually attempt the charm. Lorin took out his wand, holding it aloft. He focussed his mind hard on the image of creating the bright blue flame, he pictured in dancing inside of the jar with burning sapphire glare. He allowed himself his first attempt. Swishing and flicking his wand, Lorin spoke the enchanted words. "Innocens Inflamarae!" His voice rang out with commanding nature: A small wisp of pure blue streaked from the tip of his wand and hung ghostly in the air. It was only small, about the size of a galleon coin, but it was there nonetheless. Lorin guided the tiny flame down towards the desk, placing it carefully within the jar. It wasn't much, but the minute flame gave off a delicate glow. Now the boy tried again. "Innocens Inflamarae!" This time the streak of blue from his wand grew larger and larger still. Lorin added this, too, to his small flame which danced inside the jar. Throughout the lesson, Lorin gradually succeeded in conjuring bright blue flame after bright blue flame, each growing a burst more powerful and larger than its predecessor, until finally, by the lesson's end, the child had build up a vast swirling collection of burning blue fire contained within his jar. Lorin even felt a little pleased with himself for his good efforts, and he was determined to practice until he was up to the Professor's standards. Thanking the man for his most entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable of classes, Lorin packed away his wand, and the jar, and headed out into the corridors, back up towards the Ravenclaw tower where he vowed to get hard to work on all of his class studies. Especially revising his favourite charms. |
