James had been thoroughly impressed with how each and every one of his first years had performed this year. To learn eight spells in a single term was quite a feat not to mention any other spells they would learn in their other classes. They seem to take it all in stride and for that he would make sure that the next lesson before exams was a fun one. However before they could have fun they still had one more practical lesson left. Skipping out on his normal reading time before the lesson James read over his notes and set up a few things around the room before the class arrived. Dummies with fake wands lined the walls on either side of the class which he had borrowed from the dueling chambers for the purpose of this lesson. He knew for a fact that the D.A.D.A Professor did teach students some basic dueling spells but he wanted to explain a few things more in detail and add a spell or two to their dueling repertoire. He had gotten the last dummy in place when he heard the sound the first student shuffling in as well as the excited whispering of the possible lesson for the day. Smiling he made his way back up to the front of the class where he took roll call quickly before jumping in today’s lesson. "Emotion. We all share common emotions as human beings. Some of these emotions can be stronger at times in some then they are in others. Magic can often times reflect the feelings of a wizard or a witch. You have learned in D.A.D.A that some spells can only be performed with a strong intent or emotion behind them. In the same breath some spells can change nature complete when performed under a particular emotional response. Anger. Hatred. Fear. These can cause spells to act out differently than if a wizard or witch is come, such as Accio, the summoning spell. When Calm the spell will summon and object at a safe speed towards the witch or wizard, while if cast when mad or enraged it may cause the object to accelerate in speed exponentially. One the flipside strong positive emotions such as love, a desire to protect, or joy can cause a spell to perform better or stronger than normal. Such was the case for the famous boy who lived, Harry Potter. Due to his mother’s love he was able to withstand a killing curse from one of the strongest dark wizard the magical world has ever seen. The reason I am telling you this is because we can be greatly influenced by our moods and if we do not guard our emotional well-being carefully we can lose control over our magic. In some cases witches and wizards have been known to lose it complete. The spells you will learn today our spells that can be more powerful based on your emotions so we must always be mindful, “ James said as he circled the room in a slow leisurely pace. He knew all too well how emotions could affect a wizards/witches magic as his time at school often caused his magic to act out of whack do to the emotional stress he underwent at the hands of bullies. He had to learn to control his emotions and not act recklessly which he managed to do with the help of meditation and yoga. "The first charm you will learn today is the counter –charm to Accio which we learned last week. Depulso, or the banishing is more difficult to learn as it is not a repellent charm as some would think but rather a charm that works against a single object. For this I will need you all to line up in six lines across from one of the dummies," Jamie said to the class as he moved to the front of the room and cast a spell that pushed all of the desks in the room out of the way to give the class plenty of room. Standing at the front of the class once more he took out his wand and waited for everyone to get in place and quiet down. "Now this spell is one which requires a sweep of your wand, be sure that you're pointing it at the object which you want to send away. And you'll say 'Depulso'. I want you each to do this charm twice against the dummy. You should realize by now that you do not have to say the object name in which you want to banish but rather you must point your wand at the object in question. A clear line of sight and a steady hand is important for this spell to work properly. And remember clear your mind and stay calm or else you spell may perform with more or less strength then you were hoping for." James said before standing in the center of the class as he watched the students performed the spell against the dummies. He found that a larger object was easier to hit, not to mention the dummies did allow those who wanted to work on more precise aim enough of a challenge to push themselves. He walked about and helped the students who were struggling but once everyone had performed the spell twice he moved on with the lesson. Moving to the front of the classroom once more, James waved his wand and the dummies placed themselves back to their starting positions. His face was serious as he looked out at the students. "Very good. Next is ' Expelliarmus'.This is a rather useful spell in duels and self-defense and so you should use it only when the need arise rather than haphazardly as some of you will surely want to do. Expelliarmus is a disarming charm used to knock whatever an individual is holding in their hand into the air though it is more commonly used to remove a wand from an opponent’s grasp. With a strong emotion behind it, a wizard can be blown back a few feet while without the proper concentration or focus a wizard can fight off the spell by simply holding tightly on to their wand. As such you must stay focus and want to disarm the dummies before you in order for the spell to work as it should. Everyone practice the spell twice and I will be around to help you if you need. Once you have done the spell twice you may practice either spell again until the end of the class. No homework tonight so enjoy the night off." James said looking about the classroom. Safety was his top priority, the last thing he needed was a student being sent to the Hospital Wing. Once the students were finished he dismissed them and began to set up the classroom for the next lesson. Assignment: Roleplay the Lesson Total Points possible: 10 Extra credit: 0 |
