James was once more nose deep in his romance novel as he nibbled on a cream cheese danish that he swiped from the kitchen after having come from an interesting meeting with the house elves who all seemed pleased to have a guest in the kitchen. He had already placed a large feather on the student’s desks for the day’s lesson and so he decided to reward himself with a little reading before the children arrived. The feathers were of various colors and designs and since the class had no seating chart he would imagine there would be a mad dash for some of the more festive feather. The old plain white ones were so boring and so he had hurried out to the local animal store in his spare time and bought an enormous bag of ones that the students would be able to take with them to keep. It was a small reward for being a great class this term so far. Flicking his wand so the door would open he closed his book and once more deposited in his top desk drawer as he waited for the kids to trickle in one by one and take their seat. At the start of the lesson signaled by the bell he flicked his wand again and the door closed as he stood up and took roll call. Jamie was pleased to see the eager faces of his students as they compared their feathers with one another. "Heya, first years," he said as he motioned for them all to settle down and quiet down, "welcome to another Charms lesson. Today we will be studying a most useful spell that goes by the incantation of 'Wingardium Leviosa. Who can tell me what this spell is used for?” James asked as several hand shot up in the air. If the students had been cracking open their text book at all and browsed the chapters assigned each week they would know the answer to the question. He did not care for the spell book as it was somewhat outdate as spells and charms often became a part of a fade either rolling in or out of mind depending on the generation and need for them. Having been a part of the Committee on Experimental charms he often review and created a wide range of spells that he felt should be taught at the school but he realized that there was something fundamental about the basics so he did not want to rock the boat too much for the first year students. Looking around the room he called upon a random student so as not to show favoritism. "It's a levitating spell. It makes things float." The student answered. Jamie smiled at the students rather broken down description of the spell; it seemed that his laid back approach to his lesson was rubbing off on a few of his students. He made his normal rounds through the aisle as he smiled down at a few students and took a note from another giving them a roll of his eyes as he went on without drawing much attention to the student passing the note. "Yes. Completely right. Five points. The spell can come in very handy in everyday life. You can move a boiling cauldron, an annoying younger sibling, help move furniture you know those essential pain in the butt nuisances," James said, as a the students with younger brothers or sister laughed at his joke though he hoped none of them would be as cruel as to use the spells to bully someone. He liked to keep his kids on their toes and have a little fun with the lesson so he tried to joke around when he could. Once more he motioned for the first years to settle down as he smiled and winked in good nature at a few of the students. "Okay," he said confidently as he decided to bunker down, "on your desk you will note a large feather. I hope you all have your wands because you'll need them in a few minutes." He waited for the students to take out their wands. James raised his own wand, facing his desk where a feather of light baby blue color sat lazily in anticipation. "Watch this." He aimed his wand towards the feather, swishing it and flicking it as he spoke. "Wingardium Leviosa!" The feather rose up into the air, floating wherever Jamie pointed his wand. He moved the feather back to the desk, casting off the spell with a small, "Finite," and returning his eyes to the class. "Okay for most simple spells you will find that the swish and flick motion is commonly used in terms of wand movement. From there you will deviate slightly and should be able to perform almost any spell. So let’s work on the swish and flick motion.” James gently swished and flicked his wand repetitively, urging the class to follow suit and say it out loud. "Swish and flick." Once certain they had grasped this movement, James signaled for them to lower their wands. "Good effort, I see most of you have great form so let’s move on to the next part " he said, as he paced back in forth in the front of the class, "now let's practice the spell pronunciation: "Wing-GAR-dee-um lev-ee-OH-sa. Make sure the 'GAR' is nice and long. Really emphasize that 'OH'." he listened to them practice for a good couple of tries before beckoning silence. "Well done, well done. Now, let's try putting the two together. Keep trying until you get it. You may leave when you have mastered it. I'm here if you need help. And I'll be around the help correct your movements and pronunciation. Oh I almost forgot, to lower the feather back down you can use the simple and multipurpose counter spell Finite. Finite puts a stop to most spells so long as you know what spell is being used." James said as he made his way around the class helping those who needed as he went. When the bell signaled he dismissed all the students who had not got a handle on the spell so they would not be late to their next class. Assignment: Roleplay the Lesson Total Points possible: 10 Extra credit: 5 points to the first person to answer the professor's question. |

Daniel walked up to Charms in quite a neutral fashion. He didn't really care much, as he got used to the lessons. Knowing Charms was the one where they actually learn spells, he liked it. It was then when he sat down in the last row, taking out his notebook, quill and ink, placing them at ready. It was then when the professor asked the question. Just because he knew, he threw his hand up in the air. He didn't really expect to be called out, because he was in the last row, but the teacher pointed towards him. "It's a levitating spell. It makes things float.", he said, before lowering his voice, to a much quieter tone. "Bloody easy as that." He then inspected the feather on his desk. He didn't really like fluffy items, so the feather annoyed him. He took his Ivy wand out, and pointed it towards the feather. He made the swish and flick motion, saying: "Wingardium Leviosa!", and the feather was sent flying upwards. He then flew it around for a bit. He used the feather to try and annoy one of the girls in the class, before putting it down onto his desk. "Finite." |

Victoire was excited. She was really looking forward to the charms lesson that week. Since she had already been able to do the spell, this week meant that she might be able to learn a brand new spell. Which was easy to make her very excited. She couldn't wait until she was able to do more and more spells. It was of course still her first year, so Victoire was very aware that she might not be able to do many spells, but that didn't really dampen her optimism about the spells. She was incredibly excited to be doing lots of new things, and any spells would be good spells. It was however still a little odd to her to be excited about such things. She hadn't really been able to just sit down and get used to half the terms that the professors and other students were just throwing out. She had to just take it all at face value, which put her at a disadvantage until she could actually read up on everything and find out. It wasn't the most fun when she was for a moment confused but, Victoire wouldn't give this up for anything. Which was why she excitedly making her way to the Charms classroom with a bright smile. Getting to the classroom, the girl took her now, usual spot in the front of the room. Opening up her book to the correct page, or so she believed would be, Victoire got herself ready for the class, putting her wand down beside the book, but keeping the quill in hand to make notes. Looking up at the professor as he began speaking, she realised that this was the least strict of all the professors they seemed to have during this semester and as much as she enjoyed the strictness, this man was good at teaching, and she found that he helped make the class for her. She raised her hand to answer the question but was not however picked. The other student saying exactly what she would've said had she been called up. After a brief lecture, talking about the spell and it's name, Victoire was glad they'd get to try it. She wondered how heavy something would have to be until she couldn't lift it any more. She put the weather at the centre of the table, and picking her wand, did the movement a couple of times. She imagined what she wanted to happen, and with a deep breath said, "Wingardium Leviosa" The swish and flick movement added as she spoke, caused the feather to float up. She smiled as she stopped the spell and tried it again. Pushed it higher and away from her. Closer and then settle just at her eye line. The girl was annoyed when the lesson was over, and decided she had to practice some more. Gathering her things, she rushed out the room. |
