James stood at the back of the room with his wand out as he the sound of rapid mutter could be heard if one where to get close enough to hear the man. Spell after spell he was casting a wide range of spells on several objects for a side job that he had taken for a friend from the ministry. It was this side job that gave him the inspiration for the days lesson. Finishing up the last spell he had finished just in time as he could hear the murmurs of his second years behind him. Time had flown a bit faster than he had expected and as such it seemed that the last of the students had already shuffled in. James smiled at the slightly confused individuals before he gave his wand a quick flick causing the door to the class to close with a solid thud as he made his way to the front of the class to begin the lesson. “Hello guys and girls, I do hope that last lesson’s review helped brush of your charms workmanship. This year you will be learning practical charms year two which will introduce a wide range of slight complex spells that will require a good deal more focus then first year charms. So shall we learn your first charm of the year, shall we?” James said as he pulled out his wand once more and began to make his way between the aisles. “Can anyone tell me what spell allows you to change the color of an object? Uh…mmm… yes you there!” James said pointing to one of the students in the room. “Professor Jamie, Colovaria or the Color Change Charm is used to change the color of an object!” The student responded as they delivered a perfect recollection of the spell showing off that they had at least cracked there charms book this semester. It was common for students to procrastinate in the second semester much more than the first as the school year was on its approach to the end of the year as well as summer vacation. Smiling brightly he continued on with his lecture, “You are absolutely correct and as a reward take five points for your house.” James said as the students peers seemed to smile at the student who had earned them an easy few points. “Colovaria at first seems to be a very simple charm in theory but it can be quiet difficult for the untrained mind. When casting the charm you need to have a clear vision of what color you’re trying to achieve and only when you are completely focused on the color do you cast the charm. Any break in focus may result in a complete failure to perform this as a whole or you may end up getting a color that you did not want. No wand movement is necessary to perform this spell, simply point your wand think of the color and cast. I would like you all to take off your robes and use them as the object for today’s spell. You will have until the end of the class to change your robes a different color. Once your have done that then I would like you to turn your robes back to the dress code appropriate black. If for some reason you are unable to change your robes back to the proper color I will do so for you but you will then be assigned homework. So it will be in your best interest to do your very best. I will be around to help out those who need it.“ With that James motioned for the students to set to work. James walked about the room stepping in offering helpful advice or words of encouragement as he saw fit but for the most part it seemed that the students were struggling a bit with the spell which was what he was hoping to accomplish this year. How would any of them ever hope to get better if he did not push them like he had been so far? It was not long before the bell sounded which marked the end of the day’s lesson. James stood by the door and cast the proper spell on the robes that were of unique color and assigned practical homework to all those who failed to return their robes to the correct color. Of course the assigning of homework resulted into a bit of grumbling but he did not mind as he hoped by the end of the year these second years would be a pro at this spell. After all it would be on the end of the year exam. Assignment : Roleplay the lesson Total Points possible: 10 Extra credit: 5 Points to the first student to answer the question |

Donald loved charms it was by far his favourite lesson and the magic he felt that he was most skilled at. The 12 year old entered the lesson grinning and took his usually seat at the front of the class and dug out his book, parchment and quill ready for the lesson to begin. The young boy felt very confident with charms, it was something which he did seem to have a bit of a natural talent for, which is more than can be said of his woeful Transfiguration skills. So, when the professor mentioned the spell today was about changing an object from one colour to another, Don's face fell a fair bit. That sounded like a Transfiguration spell to him; then again it wasn't really transforming an object, just making it another colour. He was letting his worries about Transfiguration get to him, this was a Charms spell and he knew it, stop panicking over everything he mentally chastised himself. The 2nd year Ravenclaw focused more on the class, what was the name of the spell, he knew it, but what was it. The little boy concentrated hard....Ah-ha yes, that was it. His hand shot up in the air "Sir, the spell Colour Change Charm is called Colovaria" he said earnestly. Donnie bit his lip when he said to use the spell on his own robes, what if he made a mistake and the colour couldn’t be reversed and he ended up with pink robes? Even worse, that the spell went totally wrong and he made his robes disappear! He definitely didn't want the embarrassment of that happening. No, yet again he was being silly. Of course the spell wasn't going to be irreversible, and he wasn't going to make his clothes vanish. He was just worrying over nothing. Taking a deep a deep breath the young boy cast the spell upon himself, and nothing happened. Donald supposed that was the least worst and most likely outcome of worst scenarios he could have thought of. "Focus" he said quietly to himself, before closely his eyes a bit and taking a couple more breaths. Once he felt adequately relaxed, Don yet again tried the spell, this time he was successful, his robes were now a bright red colour. He tried it again, and now they were purple, then pink, then orange, then cyan and finally they were back to their original colour. Yep, the Ravenclaw lad was certain that he now had the hang of the spell. |

Lorin strode cheerfully into the Charms classroom. What a difference a good night's sleep had made to his usual anxious mood. The lesson got off to a quick start and Lorin's hand shot up at the first opportunity to answer the Professor's question. But alas, he was beaten to it by a fellow Ravenclaw. Nevermind, for the boy was also knowledgeable of the subject and the correct answer, winning their house an extra five points. Lorin awarded the boy, whose name he knew to be Donald, a shining smile. It was sometimes hard for students to feel comfortable enough to speak up in the intimidating environment of the classroom. The lesson progressed rather eagerly and it seemed that practical charm spells were in the workings of the day's lesson plan. Lorin felt the excitement jettison through his blood. He sat a little more upright, taking out his wand and preparing to learn the required movements and pronunciations. Removing his robes only a little hesitantly, Lorin laid them out upon the desk surface. He focussed his mind wholly upon them, taking in the thick fabric, what he was sure had once been a luxurious material but had come to him tattered and aged from the second-hand shop. His eyes danced over the bleak lack of colour, the faded marks and stains he had desperately tried to remove. Mud, mostly, from his first year when a gang of Slytherins had pushed him down to into the cold, squelching earth. He could still taste the potent stench, even now. Bringing his mind back to the clothing before him, Lorin concentrated hard. Okay, what colour was this fabric to become? Something bright would be harder to imagine, surely? But then again, the idea of bright orange robes seemed to tickle Lorin's fancy, and for a moment the boy become rather amused by this thought. Being incapable of shaking the picture from his mind, Lorin decided to flow with this colour instead of rejecting it. He took aim of his wand to its target and concentrated hard. It was quite the sight to see: One moment the robes lack black and dormant upon the desk, the next they grew a vibrant shade of atomic tangerine. Hmm.. Lorin mused, wondering how much more orange he could get them, for this shade seemed almost a little pink, another try. Here we go.. The boy cast the spell a second time and this time the once-black robes burst forth a bright and shimmering shade of Spanish orange. Perfect. Lorin beamed, proud of his achievements. Now to change them back. But this proved a little more tricky than he hoped, the bold image of bright orange robes still fresh in his mind and upon the tabletop. He resorted, at last, to taking a moment to close his eyes and picture the robes when he had first purchased them from the dusty shop. Ah, yes, that was it. Black. Black as the darkest winter sky. When Lorin re-opened his eyes, his robes were again their usual black colour. Which was a shame, really, as he rather liked the orange. |
