James stood by a nearby window as he looked out across the snow cover lawn as kids ran about in their free time throwing snowballs or building snowmen. It seemed like yesterday that he was young, wild and carefree. He did not worry about things such as bills, relationships, or responsibilities other than what was needed for him to pass O.W.l.s and N.E.W.T.s to get a decent job outside of school. Sighing softly, he sipped gingerly at his hot tea as he waited for the students to arrive for the afternoon lesson. Today it would be his first years who would have to endure another class stuck in doors while their peers played about outside. Of course Charms was a fundamental class that all wizards as well as witches needed to have a firm understanding in if they wanted to master the science of charm work. Shuffling of feet and the soft sound of eager whispers filled his ears long before young bottoms filled his seats. First years were different than most other years as they acted more like sponges hopping to absorb everything they could as quickly as they could in hopes of growing up faster. Older students wished they could grow younger with each passing year and often time envied the younger students for the simplicity of their lifestyle and course work. After year one the work load became increasingly more difficult and eventually some would falter in their studies while the stress would give birth to great and noble individuals. Caterpillars to butterflies, the transformation they took in seven years was astounding and it was this magical change in the young that drove him to eventually take up teaching. Yes it was not all that it cracked up to be all the time but he found the whole experience deeply satisfying and amazingly humble. As the students began to settle in a small smile began to sneak across his face as he turned around and once more stepped into the role of professor. “Welcome back class, I hope you all read up on charms as well as Lumos as today we will be going over both.” James said as he waited for everyone to pull out their school books and writing materials. He had hated homework as a student but had found that it was one of those necessary evils and as such he tried to keep it as simple and sweet as he could in hopes that more of his students would invest some of their time to more important task such as their education. “Charms, as some of you know, are a rather general study of magic. They are used to enchant a person, place, or thing to act or do something it otherwise cannot. A rule of thumb in the magical world is if it is not transfiguration then it is most likely a charm spell. Over your next seven years at Hogwarts you will learn spells that will allow you to unlock doors, change the color of an object, Levitate things, and at the most advance will learn a spell that can even push back a dementor. It is important for you all to learn the basics of charm work, as the skill will be used in other studies of magic in the years to come as you all progress forward from here on out. To some of you the charms that we will be practicing this year will be nothing more than simple household spells that you have seen over and over again in your homes. To others you will be blown away by all that you can achieve with a little swish and flick.” James said as he joined the kids in a soft chuckle as he did the motion with a little sass and a wink in good nature. Motioning for the class to quiet back down he walked up and down the aisles taking note of who was paying attention and who was not as he continues once more with his lecture. “Of course when it comes to magic we must remember to always be careful and to never use magic to hurt others. We are all blessed to be able to use magic and it is part of our responsibilities to use magic wisely. For those of you who have taken Defense Against the Darks and those of you who have not you will learn soon enough what the consequence of abusing magic for selfish and personal gain can do to someone so remember that as you grow up and move on to bigger things outside these halls.” James said as he wrapped up his lecture promptly as he still had just enough time to teach the class their first spell in his class for the year. “So now that we have got all of the boring stuff out of the way let us move on to the stuff you have all been waiting for, your first charm of the year. This one does not require much space so you make practice at your desk or you can pair up when I am done and work together if you like. Today I will show you how to use Lumos and a few other light spells so pay close attention.” James said as he made his way to the front of the class. “Lumos is a light charm in which you are able to create light to see in dark or hard to see places. It is a rather useful charm that has many uses and one that most first years can master by the end of the semester. Simply point the tip of your wand up toward the sky and say in a clear voice, ‘Lumos!’. Okay everyone say it with me three times, Lumos… Lumos… Lumos. Very good class now if you are able to produce this spell with ease then I would like you to try an advanced form of Lumos, Lumos Solem. Okay say that with me three times as well Lumos Solem…Lumos Solem… Lumos Solem. Very nice. Now Lumos Solem creates a beam of light that can be used more like the muggle equivalent to a flashlight for those who grew up in multimagical households. To end either spell simple cast ‘Nox!’ .I will be around to help you with your wand work and pronunciation but other than that practice the spells until the end of the class and keep the volume low so you do not disturb others. For Homework I want you to practice the three spells we learned today. You are free to spread out across the class room and if I do not get to you have a wonderful weekend.” James said as the kids began to move over through the room as they began to practice the spell. James stopped and helped a few students here and there as well as scolded a couple more for not working on the spell. Before he knew it the class was over and with smile he dismissed the class as he made his way to his desk where he began to grade homework before the end of the next lesson. Assignment: Roleplay the Lesson Total Points possible: 10 Extra credit: 0 |

Daniel entered the class, frustrated. He didn't like the school at all, but he had to do it. It was school afterall, and with it comes that precious thing we call 'knowledge', which he really needed if he wanted to become what he always dreamed to become. After a while of listening, like always, Daniel got bored. He took out a notebook from his backpack, and tore a page from it. On it, he started drawing lots of symbols that came to mind. "Okay everyone say it with me three times", the teacher said. Daniel looked at him for a second, a bit confused. 'Does he think we're bloody tolders?'. He went along with it anyway. "Lumos, lumos, frikin' lumos." He kept listening. A portable flashlight, with no battery would be a great thing, so he got him interested. "Okay say that with me three times as well", the teacher said again. 'Here we go again.' "Lumos Solem, Lumos Solem, Lumos Solem" '...Glad that's over with' Daniel then took his wand out. His Ivy wand. He knew the wand was perfect for him. It just felt right when he was holding it. He then pointed it to the sky, and said "Lumos". The tip lit up instantly. Daniel just grinned, and stared at it. After a couple of minutes, he shouted out "Nox!", and the light went out. Again, Daniel was more than pleased with his new spells. It was time for something more advanced. "Lumos Solem!", he shouted, as the wand lit up into a flashlight Daniel used to have when he was little. He always thought he afraid of the dark, but the thing that trully scared him was the mirror at the end of the room. He left the classroom with a smirk on his face. |

Charms class, week two. Charms was so far, out of the magical subjects, Maya's favourite class. She liked it because she wanted to learn as much magic as she could and she definitely didn't want to miss out. She had enjoyed last lesson very much and so she didn't want to miss out on this next lesson. Even though last lesson, they hadn't learnt any spells, Maya was still confidant that this lesson would be better. It was the second week, so that was usually the time when classes got down to business. At least in her experience. Walking into the classroom, Maya immediately took a seat towards the front near some of her fellow Hufflepuffs. She was indeed quite happy being in Hufflepuff, the common room was a lot of fun, the people were great and she absolutely adored the colour, though it was not her favourite, but that didn't matter. As long as she enjoyed it that was really the main thing. Another reason she liked this class was the professor. He seemed really nice and he looked quite young, like he was only just out of school himself and that really appealed to Maya. It reminded her of those student teachers she used to have back in her muggles schools. She liked those guys. They were a lot of fun. The Professor started to explain about the spells that they were learning today and Maya immediately started to listen even more closely then she had been. If that was even possible. Maya was even more delighted when she discovered that they would be learning Lumos and a few others. She had learnt Lumos on the first night at Hogwarts! Graeme had taught her! Oh, was she ever thankful! Now she would not look like an idiot for her first spell in class. Oh! Thankyou Graeme! The professor asked the class to repeat it with him and Maya did just as she was asked. "Lumos... Lumos... Lumos!" She found herself wondering how many of the students could already produce this spell. She knew she had a little trouble when she started, so it made sense that others would have as well. There was another part of the spell that Maya didn't know however and she repeated that as well. "Lumos Solem, Lumos Solem... Lumos Solem." Knowing she could already cast Lumos, Maya went straight into the more advanced side. Producing her wand, Maya made the necessary wand movements and said the spell. "Lumos Solem." Surprisingly, her wand lit up almost instantly and indeed resembled that of a torch she would use when they had a power outtage at her home. That was cool. "Nox." She practiced a little longer, before she had to leave the class room. |

Tabitha walked into the charms classroom rather excited for todays lesson. Professor Killian had promised they would be using magic, and casting spells today. She had been at school for a week now, and so far all she had learned about was rules, and a magical way to pick up a broom stick. When she first imagined magic school she assumed they would spend all their time learning about, and using magic. Maybe today would be the day that she would actually cast her first spell. She sat down in her desk, and pulled out her wand. Thank-fully Professor Killian started the lesson right away, and with a few words on the spells they would be learning started allowing them to practice. Tabitha picked up her wand, and took a calming breath. This was it. She was finally going to cast a spell. Tabitha pointed her wand up just how they had been shown, and said, "Lumos!" Instantly the tip of her wand lighted up. Tabitha squeaked with happiness. Her first ever spell and she got it on the first try! With a quick, "Nox", Tabitha's wand went out. She decided to try the next spell. "Lumos Solem" she said confidently. At once her wand lit up just like a flashlight. So cool! That would be very useful in a school where batteries didn't work. Tabitha cast nox, lumos, and lumos solem a few more times until the end of class. It had been a great lesson, and she couldn't wait for more. |

Victoire was excited to get to class, she knew it was the second week and well this meant that they would be doing some real work, and well this was the kind of thing that put Victoire in just the best of moods. She had loved learning that one spell and was eager to learn a lot more. It was despite the fact that she was not a morning girl she'd grown so excited at the idea that she'd be able to do a little more magic. The young girl realised that it was very likely that she would be relearning the spell she had already managed to do, but it wasn't something that would bother her. Throwing on her uniform the girl made sure that she had her wand. Well, she checked, and then double and triple check, Victoire didn't want to turn up to class without the one thing that would be important above all other things. In her last school it had been a pen, or pencil, but here, she realised that for some the wand was probably more important that writing utensils. Though she would have to always remember both. It was a good thing, that despite her small amounts of worry over forgetting it, Victoire was not actually a forgetful person. She was pretty good at remembering everything. The class was not far from where Gryffindor, which Victoire was thankful for. She managed to get to the class with little issue, and as soon as she made it, she took a usual seat at the front of the room. Happily looking to the front as the professor got ready to start his lesson. The professor started speaking, and the girl began to take notes on what he was saying. She realised fairly quickly that she did know the spell, but that didn't change how excited she was for this class, and just learning spells in general. She was so ready for it. The professor was giving a long lecture and as much as Victoire was enjoying it, she realised that she really just wanted to get started on the spell. See if she could hold it for a little longer. She liked learning, but magic, was magic and she just wanted to be able to do it. So when it finally came time for her to be able to cast the spell, the girl was practically jumping on the spot. She was just so excited. Taking up her wand, she reminded herself that she would need to calm down. So, she took a few moments to settle herself and get ready. When she was, she remembered what the older boy had said, calmly imagined the spell working, and then, "Lumos" She said with her usual confidence, and sure enough, the wand lit up. Then she cast Nox, and it turned off, moving to the other one, "Lumos Solem" Her confidence was still high, and sure enough it too lit up. With that, the class was over, and the girl was able to leave. |
